Kent was the home of an actual dinosaur!

A dinosaur fossil 13 metres long was discovered in Queen’s Road, Maidstone. Fondly nicknamed ‘Iggy’, there is a plaster cast of the dinosaur on display at the Maidstone Museum. So proud of the discovery are we, that the dinosaur also features on Maidstone’s coat of arms.Family Holidays to Asia

 

Pocahontas is buried in Gravesend!

The story of Pocahontas is quite well known by most of us. However, you may not be aware that she married a Brit. After a visit to our country, the couple boarded a ship back to Virginia, but the princess was struck down with tuberculosis. She was brought back to Kent, where she died and was buried.

Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn spent their honeymoon in Eastchurch, Sheerness. It was more of a party than anything else, as they bought almost 300 people with them. Not quite the romantic escape to a deserted island that we all dream of!

Apparently, on the Isle of Sheppey there was an old gypsy woman who took pity on a group of hungry children, so decided to make them a tart with the ingredients she had to hand. This concoction of evaporated milk and muscovado sugar led to the invention of the gypsy tart.
