Ayurveda is more than a trendy new word, it’s traditions are a blend of complementary or alternative medicines.  It was discovered in India thousands of years before modern medicine and there’s evidence of the need to balance the mind-body connection.  Ayurveda continues to be one of the world’s most sophisticated and powerful mind-body health systems. More than just treating illness, its’ goals are preventative and is a science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge).

The guiding principles of Ayurveda are: 1) the mind and body are connected, and 2) nothing is more powerful to heal the body than the mind.  It is all centred around balance; balancing lifestyle (diet, exercise) with a healthy mind.

How is this achieved?

Through diet, sleep, exercise and nature all in sync and balancing.  Also there are many meditations, detoxifying herbs and massages that help the body and mind rejuvenate.  The belief is that there are 3 dosha (mind-body) types Vatta, Pitta or Kapha.  By determining your dosha you will have a better understanding of your physical, emotional, and mental characteristics.  Therefore, you can narrow down the detox methods and mediations to use for your body-mind type.

It can be difficult to achieve complete balance in all these areas.  However, there are wellness centres and clinics throughout India to help with this, they have trained consultants and counsellors on standby.  Many require a short-term stay of a week to clear the body and mind of toxins.  You will then be given guidance to continue the wonderful balance for a healthy body and mind.
